Common kitchen foods that never expire

01/9Ingredients that almost never expire

When it comes to food, each item has a different shelf life. While some might last for just a few days, some can last months and even years together. But do you know that there are some food items which can actually last forever? Yes, there are certain foods that have a long shelf life and when stored properly, they might never expire.

02/9Salt

Salt is the most basic flavouring agent that is added to all types of vegetables, dal, curries and other savoury dishes. Salt is used to preserve other food items so it is itself a natural preservant. If stored properly, salt can literally last forever.

03/9Cornstarch

Cornstarch is often used to thicken soups, gravies and sauces. It is also used to marinate chicken or vegetables just before frying them to make the exterior crispier. Cornstarch can last for years together, only if it is kept away from moisture. Store cornstarch in an airtight jar and it will stay fresh for long.

04/9Soy sauce

Soy sauce is an irreplaceable ingredient when it comes to making Chinese-style noodles, fried rice and stir-fried vegetables. It contains a high amount of sodium, which preserves the sauce for a long time. Always store soy sauce in a glass bottle, in a cool and dark place.

05/9Vinegar

Vinegar is one such product that is used to preserve other products. So, it is self-preserving in nature. White vinegar, apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar or any other kind of vinegar can last for years together, that too without even refrigeration.

06/9Noodles

Since dry noodles are prepared using refined flour or maida, they can be stored for a long time. Make sure you keep them in a cool and dry place, away from moisture. If the packet has been opened once, it won’t last for a long time but a sealed packet will.

07/9Sugar

Sugar is a common kitchen ingredient that is used on an everyday basis. You must store it in a proper jar and always use a dry spoon to take some out. If sugar is kept away from moisture it can easily last for years together. The texture of the sugar might change with time, but it will never expire.

08/9Rice

Always store rice in an airtight container. It has low oil content which naturally preserves the rice for a long time. You can keep the big batch of rice in a large container and store some of it in a smaller container which is used on a regular basis. This way, the big container of rice will be kept away from frequent opening and closing, which might expose it to moisture.

09/9Honey

Honey has a low acidic pH and very low moisture levels, which prevents the growth of bacteria. Honey has a long shelf-life; though it might crystallize over time, it would be still fit for consumption.
